Reviews of a library playlist for a Tuesday Night

Hey, Nick Nutter here, coming as live and direct as a blog can be (especially one I started writing in the library on Tuesday night) with a batch of music reviews.  Since it's still a few weeks before anything good comes out, I just reviewed whatever I ended up listening to this past Tuesday night.  This is what came out:

The Cranberries "Bury The Hatchet" (1999) ***

Not an Earth-changing album by any stretch of the imagination, but not bad either.  "Bury The Hatchet" is "better than average" to the core, for better or worse.

The Hush Sound "Like Vines" (2006) *** and 1/8

Really dig "A Dark Congregation" and "Don't Wake Me Up".  The vibe is Ben Folds Five-ian, but by way of Eisley because of the female vocal approach.  And oh snap, this is the female vocalist from Gold Motel?  Word.  (What up, Emily White?)  The album gets a bit same-y during the back half, but it's short, so it's not like it's a painful experience.

The John Butler Trio "Grand National" (2007) ***

Vocally reminiscent of Brandon Boyd, but without any of the theatrics (i.e. the moaning or wailing that make Incubus what they are).  It's a folksy, bluesy kind of rock, but with a poppy tinge to it.  They have enough groove to overcome the smoothness of the production.  So really, same as "Bury The Hatchet", though for different reasons.  At least this album has more energy to it.  Decent if you're sick of Dave Matthews and Blues Traveler, but don't want to stray too far from either; it's enough of a fresh take to be worth a shot.

Morta Skuld "Serving Two Masters" (2014) ***

Better than I thought it'd be.  I was given a copy of this EP by a friend, given that we've not only seen this band live together, we've met two of the members moms.  (All this in spite of neither of us liking death metal.) (Another aside, then I'll get to the point: She's actually responsible for me having all four of these albums for the review.)

Point being, I thought this'd be all blast beats and terrible vocals, but it actually has GROOVE; something sorely lacking in a lot of music these days.  I wound up liking four of the five songs ("Presumed Dead" being the only pothole), and would recommend this to the headbanger set.  It's pretty dece.

Whelp, that'll do it for now.  Keep checking back, cuz you never know when I'll strike...
